BIG SWEEP Volunteers: 10+ Clean-ups Oct. 4 & 5

This is it -- the BIGGEST weekend yet!  NC Big Sweep is officially this Sat., Oct. 4th with litter clean-ups state-wide.

Wake County's cleanup lineup offers 10+ sites where volunteers can make a difference to mark Big Sweep's 27th year in removing unwanted trash from the environment. Please contact the Zone Captain at your selected site to pre-register and to obtain more information.

SAT., OCT. 4th

CARY
Town of Cary (multiple sites across town) ~~ (Neuse: Walnut, Crabtree, Swift and Middle Creeks; Cape Fear: Lower & Upper New Hope Creeks)
VOLUNTEERS WELCOME!  Shift A 8:30am-9:30am, Shift B 10:30am-11:30am, Shift C 1:30pm-2:30pm, Shift D 3:30pm-4:30pm.
Enjoy the beautiful fall weather while helping to keep our community litter free!  Join us at one of our town-sponsored locations or select a site of your own.  We welcome groups and individuals and will provide supplies at the start, and free collection services at the end.  Part of the Spruce program, Cary’s Spring Litter Sweep is a local effort to participate in the statewide NC Big Sweep.  All volunteers must register in advance and be at least 15 years old or accompanied by an adult.  Registration closes at 5:00pm on Oct. 1, 2014.  To register, EMAIL Zone Captain Sarah Justice at sarah.justice AT townofcary.org or call 919-469-4301.

FUQUAY-VARINA
Kenneth Branch at Carroll Howard Johnson Environmental Center (for families) ~~ and Terrible & Middle Creeks (for Fuquay-Varina High School students only) VOLUNTEERS WELCOME!  8:30 am-12:30 pm.
Meet at 8:30 am at the Carroll Howard Johnson Environmental Center. Gloves, trash bags and data cards will be provided.  Volunteers should wear long pants and sturdy shoes or boots. Volunteers will work until 12:30 pm. This site is appropriate for families with young children. This cleanup is coordinated in partnership by The Center for Human-Earth Restoration and Fuquay-Varina Parks and Recreation.  Please register in advance by contacting Zone Captain Randy Senzig at rsenzig AT nc.rr.com or 919-270-9682.  Directions: Take Highway 401 South through the town of Fuquay-Varina to Wagstaff Road. Turn right on Wagstaff. The Environmental Center will be approximately ¼ mile on the left.

MORRISVILLE
Lake Crabtree at Lake Crabtree County Park ~~ PRIZE RAFFLE! VOLUNTEERS WELCOME!  Minors and high school students must be accompanied by an adult.  Groups with minors must complete waivers prior to the event. 9:00 am to 12 Noon.
Meet at 9:00 am at Boat Rental Tower to clean up the shore of Lake Crabtree and its connecting creeks.  Gloves, trash bags and data cards will be provided.  Cleanup continues until 12 noon.  Volunteers will learn why it’s important to educate others about litter.  Prizes will be raffled! Minors and high school students must be accompanied by an adult (does not have to be child’s guardian.)  Groups with minors must complete waivers prior to the event. Pre-registration is required.  Contact Daniel Wheeler at 919-460-3355. Directions:  Lake Crabtree park is located at 1400 Aviation Parkway, Morrisville, NC 27560.  From I-40, take Exit 285 (Aviation Parkway).  Go south towards Morrisville, away from airport.  Proceed downhill less than 1/4 mile and turn left at the light into park.  Once in park, take fourth right to go to Boat Rental Tower.

RALEIGH
Big Sweep at Blue Jay is appropriate for ages 8 and up – families, groups or individuals; however, the site for litter removal is on rocky shorelines in what may be hot and/or humid conditions.  Volunteers under the age of 16 must be part of an organized group with a participating adult supervisor or be accompanied by a guardian.  Age and health should be considered when volunteering for this event.  IMPORTANT:  All Big Sweep volunteers must sign a Volunteer Service Agreement and Release Form.  Forms are available on-site for adults, but minors must bring this form signed by a parent or guardian.  Pre-registration required.  Contact Blue Jay at 919-870-4330 or email the park at bluejaypoint AT wakegov.com.  Blue Jay Park is located on Falls Lake off Six Forks Rd in north Raleigh.  Directions sent to participants that register directly with the park.

Perry Creek at Durant Nature Park in North Raleigh ~~ VOLUNTEERS WELCOME!  9:00 am to 12 Noon
Help keep Durant Nature Park clean by coming out to the annual Big Sweep! Trash bags, gloves and water will be provided.  Pre-registration is required and can be done through RecLink: www.parks.raleighnc.gov using barcode #144216. Volunteers 8 years and up are welcome.  Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  Meet at the Park Office which is located at the North Parking lot off Durant Road. Park address is:  8305 Camp Durant Road, Raleigh.  For more information, please call the Park Office at 919-870-2871.

Rocky Branch Creek and Greenway at Boylan Avenue ~~ VOLUNTEERS WELCOME!  9:00 am to 12:00 pm.
At 9 am, meet at the Rocky Branch Creek and Greenway parking lot off of Boylan Avenue in downtown Raleigh.  We’ll clean the section from the culvert under Western Blvd. by the railroad bridge near Hunt Drive to the culvert under S. Saunders Street, with the option to expand this downstream or upstream if we have enough volunteers. We will also clean up the adjacent greenway along Rocky Branch.  Residents of the Boylan Heights Neighborhood and volunteers from the public are welcome.  Sign-up by contacting Zone Captain Sandro Gisler at 919-355-8703 or sandrogisler AT sandrogisler.com

Umstead State Park in West Raleigh ~~ VOLUNTEERS WELCOME!  9:00 am to 12:00 pm.
Volunteers from the public are invited to join the River Guardian Foundation and Umstead Coalition in cleaning up the lakes and trails of Umstead State Park.  Gloves, trash bags, and data cards will be provided. Volunteers 8 years and up are welcome.  Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  Volunteers must pre-register to receive details on meeting location, etc. from River Guardian Foundation President and Big Sweep Zone Captain George Matthis at George AT riverguardfdn.org  Note: Can’t make this date?  Come out to Umstead Dec. 4th from 9am-12pm.
